Many questions surround SEO content length and how to rank the highest.
Google doesn’t recommend a word count, but some research has shown that longer-form content ranks higher than shorter-form.
You should make sure your content ranks, gets read and converts if you are interested in long-form writing. This will ensure you have a return on investment.
Is long-form content the same thing?
Long-form content is considered to exceed 1,000 words by most people. This content is more detailed, provides extra value to the reader, and contains more research, insight, and information than just a short read.
The reader should feel comfortable reading long-form content. They need to be able to answer their questions and know how the information applies to their situation.
How should long-form content be structured?
Your goal is to provide information that will help your readers. Consider them. What do they want or need? Which questions are they asking?
Your job is to anticipate and respond to their questions in your work. You can ask them questions if you aren’t sure.
To help students get to the next step, use the guide questions below to determine which information is important.
- What should they know?
- Why is it important?
- They can do what they want with this information.
- Which baseline information is necessary to help this idea make sense?
- But what if they do not have the baseline knowledge?
- What does all this mean for them?
- Is there a next step for them?
To get a certain word count, don’t waste your time writing unnecessary fluff.
Your content must be valuable and helpful to your customers so that they will want more.
They’ll leave the site if they don’t find anything of value.
Instead of writing to a set word count, write to tell stories and add value. You will get better content over time.
How do you rank long-form articles to get read, convert and rank them?
Make sure your reader has a converter path . To drive conversions and revenue, your content must be tied to products or services.
Your potential customers will be more inclined to buy if you answer their questions and offer solutions to their problems. Provide additional information to help your potential customer move on to the next stage.
Offer this opt-in if it ties in with the content. This will help them as well as build your email list.
You need to ensure that your content converts. Every piece of content you create must be related to your core products or services.
My students learn to select content pillars which link to their products or services, and to write on topics that are related.
It’s great to create long-form content pieces and rank at the top on Google. But if you don’t drive relevant traffic it will not convert and it’s a waste.

What can you do to ensure your long-form content is ranked high?
While we all understand that we don’t have control over Google’s ranking algorithm, we do know what it does and how to optimize for it.
First verify that there is a demand for the topic, then choose a keyword or keywords you can rank for. Next, create content for your audience .
Make sure that there is interest in the topic.
Make sure you have an audience to share your content.
You may think it’s a good idea. It’s not likely that anyone is looking for this information.
However, it is important to remember that search volume does not determine the choice of a keyword. We’ll discuss this more.
Think about the subjects you would like to write about. Then, go on Google to see what is available.
- What’s the best source of information on this topic?
- Are there any existing resources on this topic?
- Are you able to offer a fresh perspective, insight, or additional information?
This might be a poor topic. Google suggests searching for the subject to see what results.
Are there any topics that Google recommends?
It’s a good sign that there is interest in the topic you are interested in.
After you have identified your topic as viable, you can use your favourite keyword research tool for identifying the keywords or keywords that you wish to target in this long-form piece of content.
Because of its length, long-form content can rank higher for many keywords than shorter-form articles.
Be careful when choosing keywords. You should choose a keyword that has high search volumes and can rank your site on Page 1.
Select your keyword
Google will show you who is currently on Page 1 of Google for the keyword that you are considering as your primary.
- Do the websites look similar?
- Which brands are more well-known?
- What depth are these articles?
- Are you able to provide more insight and value than what is currently being displayed?
You’re likely making the right choice when you choose keywords.
The keyword that has the most search volume is what your website will rank for. It’s also the word your Ideal Customers use when looking for information about this topic.
How can you make your content read?
It’s now time to start writing. Now, go back to the brainstorming notes.
How much information should you include in order to help your readers answer their questions?
Make sure that you are able to access this information. It should be easy for your readers to understand and follow.
Long-form content is time-consuming for people to read.
You must therefore provide valuable insights and statistics. They won’t read anything else on this subject.
Your piece should be formatted in an easy-to-read way. For longer pieces, this is particularly important. Consider:
- Use bullets and lists, white space is your friend.
- Use headers for your SEO purposes and to help you communicate with readers.
- You can break down your text into smaller, easier-to-read pieces.
- Keep your paragraphs and sentences short.
It is better to break up small paragraphs with numbers and bullets than large blocks of text.
If the article isn’t written in a user-friendly format, people will be reluctant to read it.
Optimize your content.
Your keyword should be used in every SEO element. Your keyword should appear in the first paragraph. This is because it closely links to the content topic. Your keyword should be included in your title.
Include your keyword in your URL, image name and header tags. Use it all through your copy.
Instead of focusing on and , focus instead on that your customer requires, rather than the frequency with which you use your keyword. It will naturally be used if you focus on the reader.
Long-form content can be a great investment if done right
Writing long-form content takes a lot of time. Writing in-depth content takes more time than writing short pieces or bite-sized articles.
The rewards can be enormous. Search results often show longer pieces ranking higher than shorter pieces.
If you create content for an audience, it is possible to rank for your company and tie your site to it. This will bring you relevant traffic and, hopefully, convert.
If you aren’t familiar with long-form content, it’s worthwhile to test it. You don’t have to write every article, but the most valuable pieces for your company should be longer and more detailed.
